Description

Eugène PELLETAN (1813-1884), writer, journalist and politician. Set of 8 autograph letters signed and addressed to Auguste Dumont, director of the Journal L'Estafette, concerning their opinions, various articles written in 1855, and various affairs. "For the past two months, I have broken with Le Siècle. Against the precedents established in similar circumstances, the editor of this newspaper has refused to make my retirement known to readers... since you have kindly given me hospitality at the Estafette, my time is yours". "I am enclosing a letter which I would ask you to insert the day before or the day of publication of my first variety. Above this letter, if you feel like it, you can put this simple note: "We can announce to our readers that Mr. Eugène Pelletan will henceforth give L'Estafette two variety articles a week". Please, no compliments, no advertising. I think men like you and us should do things simply and manfully". "I hear Mr. Havin [political director and editor-in-chief of the national daily Le Siècle] is back at it again. I really admire him. He refuses any insertion in his newspaper and he wants to force us to insert his prose, nevertheless you did well to insert his letter tail, you caught him in a trap". The whole forms 12 pages in-8, small tear on one page at the level of the signature due to the wax seal.
