The new generation, I suspect, will know me better than my own generation, which is bent on reproaching me for the severity of my work, the harshness of my character, and the isolation of my life.... What pleasures, sometimes to the point of rapture, did I not derive from my secret, buried work! The others made noise... on the literary boulevard, but I passed unnoticed". Dated December 28, 1886: "The more I try to know myself, the less I discover the qualities necessary for a journalist (...) An article I am not capable of; but a book, perhaps...".
