A PAIR OF JADE DISKS, NEOLITHIC PERIOD A PAIR OF JADE DISKS, NEOLITHIC PERIOD China, Neolithic period, c. 4000-3000 BC. Each of somewhat irregular thickness, one carved from mottled green jade showing numerous striations and patches of lighter and darker colors ranging from spinach green to dark gray, the other of dark brown-green color with brighter green areas and calcification. The circumferences are slightly irregular giving the discs an uneven width. Provenance: From the collection of Paolo Bertuzzi. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna, Italy. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than 60 years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom. Condition: Good condition with wear and natural imperfections. Hairlines, fissures, losses along the outer edges, traces of weathering, abrasions, and chips. The first with malachite encrustations. Carved in the form of a cicada with its wings tucked behind, the face with large bulging eyes, the back pierced with an aperture for suspension. The opaque stone of a grayish white tone with black veins and patches as well as areas of calcification. Provenance: From a European private collection. Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear and minuscule nibbling. The stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into minor hairlines. A LARGE GREEN JADE ‘SILK-WORM’ PENDANT, HONGSHAN CULTURE A LARGE GREEN JADE ‘SILK-WORM’ PENDANT, HONGSHAN CULTURE China, Neolithic period, 3500-2500 BC. Carved with a flat head, two large eyes, and a small mouth, the body boldly carved with shallow grooves immolating the worms wrinkly skin. Pierced with a horizontal aperture for suspension. The opaque jade of a spinach-green tone with dark green and icy inclusions, as well as calcification. Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age, with wear. Signs of weathering and erosion, minuscule nicks smoothened over the millennia, and nibbling to edges. Provenance: German private collection.
