OPERA - NOVELLI Giulia (1859 - 1932) - Autograph letter signed Autograph letter signed, not dated (1878), by the Italian mezzo-soprano. She made her professional opera debut in Rome in 1875, as Pierotto in Gaetano Donizetti's “Linda di Chamounix”. In the 1880s she had a very successful career at an international level. She performed at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo (1884), at the Teatro di San Carlo, Naples (1888, 1891), at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires (1888), at the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro and at the Liceu in Barcelona. She was the wife of the tenor Francisco Viñas (1863 - 1933). Addressed to the Portuguese composer José Augusto Ferreira viscount d’Arneiro (1838-1903): “…Non avendo potuto farle i miei più sentiti complimenti per l’immenso successo del suo impareggiabile lavoro la Derelitta, mi prendo la libertà d’inviarle queste due righe, che sono la vera espressione del mio entusiasmo per il suo gran talento…”. 1 p. Frontispiece portrait and 32 black illustrations by Joseph GRECO. An officer in the Welsh Grenadier Guards and a celebrated dandy, Rees Howell GRONOW (1794-1865) frequented London and Parisian high society. He published several volumes of memoirs and souvenirs. "When he relates his personal experiences, as in his account of the state of Paris in 1815, the condition of society in London in his own time, and the doings of the court of Napoleon III, his testimony is to be relied on [...] (Dictionary of National Biography).
