Marin Marie Paul-Emmanuel Durand Couppel de Saint-Front known as Marin MARIE (1901-1987). Sailboat leaving a Polynesian island (?) with sailboats in the background. Sepia watercolor signed lower left (foxing). Height 24 cm - Width 35.5 cm Growing up in Brittany, Marin Marie was exposed to the sea from an early age, particularly during his stays in Chaussey. As a law student, he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and exhibited at the Devambez gallery. For his military service, he embarked on Commander Charcot's Pourquoi Pas, with whom he became close friends. A seasoned sailor, he crossed the Atlantic solo. Appointed official Navy painter in 1935. During the Second World War, he took part in the destruction of the fleet at Mers el-Kébir. After being made an Officier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1950, he left for Bora-Bora in 1969 to join his son Yves and discover Polynesia. Our work may date from this period, as evidenced by the presence of what we believe to be pahi or prao, traditional Polynesian boats. The background of our work may evoke the high-reliefs of the Acores?
