MARMONT (Auguste-Frédéric-Louis Wiesse de). Mémoires. Paris, Perrotin, [1856-]1857. 9 volumes in-8, half blue basane, smooth threaded spines with gilt ermines frieze at tail, marbled paper cover on boards, speckled edges, spines a little faded and slightly rubbed, a few freckles (period binding). First edition of the Duke of Ragusa's memoirs, "of the first order for Bonaparte's youth" (Tulard, no. 963; Fierro, no. 957). Covering the period from 1792 to 1841, these memoirs, published posthumously from November 5, 1856 to March 1857, are clearly biased towards other military figures of the time, and take an apologetic approach to the critical moments of the marshal's defection in April 1814 and his role in suppressing the popular uprising against CharlesX in 1830. The work provoked acerbic criticism, several hostile publications, and disputes between publisher Charles-Arthur Perrotin and the daughters of Prince Eugène (implicated in volumeVI): the latter demanded the insertion of appendices, which Perrotin carried out, but as this insertion was made in volumeIX, not in the incriminated volume, there was a lawsuit in the summer of 1857, and for subsequent editions Perrotin had to move this insertion to volumeVI.
