Representing the Holy Mystery of the Immaculate Conception of Mary narrated in the Gospel of Luke in which the Angel, appearing before Mary, said to her: “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you”, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace before God, and you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, whom you will name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will reign in the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end." Mary said to the angel: “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” The angel answered him and said: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you, and therefore the begotten son will be holy, he will be called the Son of God. And Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is now the sixth month since she was barren, because nothing is impossible with God. Miniature on parchment in polychrome and gilt (28.7 x 21.7 cm). Beautiful 19th-century miniature presented to Pope Pius IX by the Congrégation des Soeurs Hospitalières de Saint-Thomas de Villeneuve. Painted with the coat of arms of the Holy See and dedicated in calligraphy in black, red and gold on the reverse. (Left margins warped).
