Ce jeune enfant endormi s’inspire vraisemblablement du thème hellénistique représentant Cupidon endormi qui connait un large succès à l’époque antique et à la Renaissance, en particulier à travers les œuvres de Praxitèle et de Michel-Ange. Notre œuvre est le fruit de l’influence antique que l’on retrouve dans les traits du visage et de la chevelure, ainsi que des nombreuses représentations d’enfants endormis créées par le célèbre sculpteur flamand François Duquesnoy.
