Hedi TURKI (1922-2019) Self-portrait Felt pen and pastel Signed and dated 19.11.76 lower right 50 x 32 cm A leading figure of the Tunis School and elder brother of the famous Zoubeir Turki, Hédi Turki is a draughtsman, watercolorist and painter known for his portraits and drawings in charcoal, felt pen and Indian ink. Originally from the Halfaouine district in the heart of the Medina of Tunis, he pursued his artistic training in Paris, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and in the United States, where he was influenced by the abstract expressionism of Jackson Pollock and Mark Tobey. He taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Tunis from 1963 to 1990, and held numerous exhibitions, notably at Galerie Verkamer in Paris in 1967.
