Paris, Lyon & Marseille, Lemerre, Rey & Ruat, 1907. 2 vols. in-4 (31.2 x 23.7 cm) of 5 f. b. c., 250 pp., 1 f. b. c. ; 3 f. b. c., 241 pp., 2 f. b. c., red half-chagrin, cold-framed boards, Compagnie générale transatlantique gilt on center of upper boards, ornate spines, gilt titles, tomaisons and odds (publisher's binding). Original edition of 600 copies, this one of 500 on vellum. The illustration comprises 22 plates out of text in trichrome, under captioned serpents, and 633 drawings and reproductions in black in the text. A sonnet by Frédéric Mistral precedes the text of the study. Jules Charles-Roux (1841-1918), a shipowner who headed the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique and a politician, was an ardent supporter and generous patron of Provence in the early 20th century. Copy from the first-class library of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (stamp). Ex-libris in red morocco pastedown to upper flyleaves. A few rubs, mainly on the spines, a small epidermis on the spine of vol. 2 and a few rubs on the edges, otherwise a good copy. (Colas, no. 600).
