Inside the lid, an old label bearing the handwritten note: "This carved ivory snuffbox was offered to M. l'abbé Fouques, chaplain to the French army, chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur, at the siege of Sebastopol 1854-56 by a seriously wounded supreme Russian officer to whom he was giving care".
