Description

Paul HERMER (1905-1992) Prehistoric museum in Brittany Large gouache, watercolor and ink on paper, circa 1935. Framed under glass Cartouche with title and artist's name. Dim. 70 x 104cm (view) This is an interesting project for several reasons: firstly, in view of its mastery, it is surprising that the author has not left a trace in the pantheon of architects of the Ar Seiz Breur movement. Its quality and meticulousness are reminiscent of the work of Ernest Guérin, also from Rennes. Finally, the building is impressive, influenced by religious architecture but designed to house a museum, a modern, secular cathedral. Paul Pierre Marie Hermer, born in Rennes in 1905, was a student at the Ecole régionale d'architecture de Rennes, admitted to the 2nd class on March 19, 1924, and authorized by ministerial letter of November 3, 1928 to transfer his enrolment to Paris. Student of Gabriel Héraud in Paris. Joined the Free French Forces in London on February 1, 1941, alias J.P. Hamilton, and served on General de Gaulle's staff. He died in Rennes on May 28, 1992 (Archives nationales de France, AJ/52/1264, student file). Biography by Marie-Laure Crosnier Leconte
