GEORGES BASTARD (1881-1939) MEMBER OF UAM. Tubular wood and mother-of-pearl box H. 3.5 cm Diam. 9 cm, decorated with stylized flowers. Georges Bastard was born into an old family of table makers. Trained at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Georges Bastard was a regular participant in the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français from 1902 onwards, and made a name for himself by sending objects worked in the most delicate materials, such as mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell and ivory. His production is rich in boxes, paper-cutters, bonbonnières, bowls, fans and jewelry. Although his Art Nouveau period is remarkable, Bastard was a major figure in Art Deco and the Union des Artistes Modernes in the 1920s and 1930s.
