Description
Jules LELEU (1883 - 1961) ATELIERS JEAN PROUVE (commonly attributed to) Chair known as the "Martel de Janville", model created circa 1934-1936, in folded, welded and red-lacquered sheet metal with a slightly enveloping hollowed-out back on a corner base with straight, hollow legs. Seat covered with a removable cushion in cream fabric (back slightly split, wear, traces of damp and small stains). Height 81 cm - Length 44 cm - Depth 44 cm History: designed to furnish the Geoffroy Martel de Janville sanatorium on the Plateau d'Assy in 1936. A similar model is preserved in the collections of the Musée des Années 30 (Boulogne-Billancourt) under inventory number 97.8.4. Jean Prouvé biographer Peter Sulzer attributes the Martel de Janville armchair to workshops other than those of Jean Prouvé.
