JOSÉ MARÍA MARQUÉS GARCÍA (Tortosa, Tarragona, 1862 - Barcelona, 1936). "The letter". Charcoal on paper. Signed in the lower corner. Measurements: 58 x 39 cm; 75 x 56 cm (frame). Son and disciple of Manuel Marqués Carles, and father of the painter José María Marqués Puig, José María Marqués García dedicated himself to landscape, portrait and religious scenes. He began his training at the La Lonja School in Barcelona, and furthered his studies in Madrid, Paris and Rome. He traveled through Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Holland, and held several solo and group exhibitions. He also took part in contests and competitions, notably the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona in 1888, the International Exhibition of London in 1898, where he won a gold medal, and the International Exhibition of Barcelona in 1929. During the last decade of the 19th century he was placed among the most important names of the time by the critics. He made a work entitled "Nuestra Señora de la Academia", destined for the Bibliográfico-Mariana de Lérida, and decorated the famous restaurant "Justin" in Barcelona. His works can be seen in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia and the Museum of Tortosa.
