A WOOD FIGURE OF BISHAMONTEN, EDO A WOOD FIGURE OF BISHAMONTEN, EDO Japan, Edo period (1615-1868) Covered in black lacquer, the guardian deity of the North standing firmly atop a rocky ledge, dressed in Chinese armor, his right arm raised and clasped to hold a staff, the left holding a pagoda, the fierce face with eyes of inlaid reverse-painted and gilt crystal or glass, the hair done up into a high chignon. Condition: Shows wear, age cracks, chips, losses, flaking, repairs, and touchups. Provenance: German private collection. Weight: 753 g Dimensions: Height 39 cm Bishamonten is the leader of the Four Heavenly Kings, a group of Buddhist deities known in Japanese as Shitennō, who preside over the cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west).

Han Xiangzi ; China, Qing dynasty, 19th century. Partially glazed and glazed porcelain. Measurements: 24,5 x 7,5 x 6,5 cm. Han Xiangzi, is a Chinese mythological figure and one of the Eight Immortals of the Taoist pantheon. He studied Taoist magical arts under the tutelage of Lü Dongbin, another of the Eight Immortals. Han Xiangzi is often depicted holding a dizi (Chinese flute), so he is also considered the patron deity of flute players. He is also believed to be the composer of the Taoist musical piece Tian Hua Yin.
