Switzerland - ZURLAUBEN (Béat Fidèle Antoine Jean Dominique de la Tour-Châtillon de). Histoire militaire des Suisses au service de la France, with supporting documents. Paris, Desaint & Saillant, Herissant & Vincent, 1751. 8 vol. in-12, havane calf, ornate ribbed spine, red and brown morocco title pages, red tr. (period binding). Rare first edition. At the age of 15, Baron Béat-Fidèle de Zurlauben (1720-1799) entered the Swiss Guard in the service of France, where he had been raised. No sooner had he completed his studies than he set to work, no doubt under the guidance of his uncle, on this important military history of the Swiss. In it, he describes the ancient constitution of the Helvetic republic, the geographical and topographical position of the cantons and their allies, and then gives the history of the republic from its origin to 1450. He outlines, in chronological order, the capitulations passed between France and the Helvetic nation, which leads him to his subject, which is the history of Swiss troops in the service of France. After explaining what a colonel general of the Swiss and Grisons is, he goes on to explain the prerogatives of a colonel general, and gives an account of the princes and lords who were invested with the title. He then goes into the same detail about the Swiss Guards regiment and its senior officers, before describing the regiments that the captains of the Swiss Guards have raised or owned, and shows which battles, actions and sieges or events of war these corps have taken part in, and which officers or soldiers have particularly distinguished themselves since the first treaty with France. At the end of the book, the author lists the orders of the day, patents and letters granted by the kings of France to reward the bravery, devotion, loyalty and services of the Swiss guards and regiments. All these details are accompanied by an indication of the works or archives from which the author has drawn. A very fine copy. Some very slight rubbing or spotting. Slight soiling to first cover of volume 8. Ex-libris JM.
