Description

John Henning (United Kingdom 1771-1851) Plaster miniatures of the Parthenon frieze presented in boxes simulating books "Henning's Sculptures Parthenon Vol 3 and Parthenon Vol 4". Each one with six plates at a scale of 1 :20 all signed and with various inscriptions about the year of manufacture, the month and day, the town and the part of the Parthenon they represent. Henning was one of the first artists to access the collection of classical sculpture of Lord Elgin who had taken fragments of the Parthenon to England, and had permission to draw the friezes of the Parthenon, even adding the parts he were missing. He made plaster reproductions that were sold by the British Museum in box sets as books. It took Elgin 12 years to complete the drawings.
