KONAGEND gallery carpet (Caucasus), late 19th century Technical characteristics: Wool velvet on wool foundation. The design of this carpet can be compared to the floor plan of a church: the walls are represented by an old gold border with florets on a brick background. And from the porch to the apse, via the nave and transept, five octagonal medallions in brick and ivory, with cruciform vegetation, can be seen on a marine field. They are linked by a stylized tree of life. Weaver's combs surround this "Key Hole" motif. The main ivory border with a succession of oak leaves and polychrome chalices is flanked by two counter-borders with multicolored "Bayadère" bands. Outer border with greenish and brick chess pieces in positive/negative. A sublime example of Konagend's "Keyhole". Dimensions: 270 x 125 cm

Generously excavated himotoshi to the back. HEIGHT 8.9 cm Condition: Good condition with minor wear, natural age cracks, and one of the feet with a repair to the edge. The netsuke he inspects is of himself inspecting a netsuke, creating a Droste effect. The robes with elaborate folds and finely detailed and stained with wave patterns. Two himotoshi to the back. Signed to the sole of one sandal Tomokazu. HEIGHT 4.4 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Provenance: Collection Gabor Orszagh, Budapest, Hungary.
