MD-S-134-00a Provenance: Artist's studio, by descent Marcel Damboise probably met Professor Pierre-Paul Grassé (1895-1985) through his sculptor friends from the Académie, at an event at the Institut. Grassé, an eminent zoologist, has been an Academician since 1948. Marcel Damboise created a medallion and bust portrait of him: a bronze proof of the bust is probably in the scientist's family.

YOURCENAR (Marguerite). L.A.S. November 22, 1968 to Marcel SPADA, École des Hautes Études, Ghent. 2 pp. handwritten in black ink on 1 f. in-4 on the letterhead of the Cour St Georges hotel in Ghent. In it, Yourcenar thanks M. Spada for hosting a conference the previous day, a few months after the publication of L'Œuvre au noir. A writer close to Francis Ponge, Marcel SPADA (1923-2014) was Director of the École des Hautes Études in Ghent and Professor of Contemporary Poetry at the Université Paul-Valéry in Montpellier.

Inscribed: I separated from the command when I was persuaded that you distrusted my detachment. Last proclamation. Simon Bolivar, David, 1820 on the obverse. Added: Portrait of Chateaubriand, plaster cast, with Atelier de Moulage Musee Beaux-arts Angels mark on reverse. Inscribed Chateaubriand. David, 1820 on recto. Ø 12.5 cm. Plaster. Pierre Jean David, or David d'Angers, was a great French sculptor and medalist. He made several sculptures for the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel in Paris, as well as for the south facade of the Louvre. He is also known for his vast production of medallions, celebrated in his time by Victor Hugo. It is estimated that he produced more than 600 portraits of mainly European personalities (La Fayette, A. de Humboldt, Victor Hugo, Goethe, etc.). Interestingly it seems that, apart from John Franklin, all the Americans portrayed by David were leaders of the Colombian independence: Bolivar and Santander, which we offer in this auction, and a last medallion of Joaquin Acosta. David d'Angers medallions are sought after and highly prized. ArtPrice records only two sales of Bolivar medallions, the last at Sotheby's in 2021. There is no recorded sale of the Acosta medallion, and only one from Santander (Artcurial, 2022), which is the same as the one being auctioned in our auction.
