DOU – FRENCH. Der Zahnarzt – The dentist. Steel engraving by William French on the painting by Gerrit Dou made in 1672 (which appears in the cloth featured in the engraving) and preserved in the Dresden Gallery. Through the illusionistic frame of a large window, we see a dentist wearing a red fur cap, proudly displaying the tooth he has just extracted from his patient. The patient, a young boy, grimaces in pain, holding his wide-brimmed hat. A copper basin, a bottle, and other medical instruments are resting on the wide window sill.
