Description

WWI POSTER ON NATIONAL LOAN. FAIVRE. “On Les Aura”. 2ème Emprunt de la Défense Nationale, souscrivez. Colored poster measuring 113 x 79 cm. Typographical data in the bottom center. Good condition. Patriotic First World War poster published in Paris in 1916. It is certainly one of the most famous: it depicts a poilu, a term colloquially used to describe French infantrymen engaged in this conflict, holding a rifle in one hand and with the other exhorting his comrades-in-arms. The text encouraged the French to take out the second loan for national defense. In all, the government would issue four during the war. This is the work of the illustrator and caricaturist Abel Faivre (1867-1945) and was published by Devambez, a firm of engravers and printers taken over by Édouard Devambez in 1873 and later by his son André Devambez. This firm produced many other posters during the war.
