In the scene, the Christ in the center is surrounded by several characters, the two floggers and others who observe. Allegrini was a freshman, painter and prolific draftsman: his works testify to great versatility, ranging from religious and allegorical subjects to historical and mythological themes. He painted mainly for palaces and churches in Rome. His works are also present in Gubbio, Savona and Genoa, where he worked for the Durazzo and Pamphili. Numerous drawings attributed to Allegrini are preserved in various public collections, including the Stadtbibliothek in Leipzig, the Metropolitan Museum and the Louvre.
