MONTHOLON (Charles-Tristan de). Letter from General Comte de Montholon, addressed by order of Emperor Napoleon to Sir Hudson Lowe English Governor of the Isle of St. Helena. Sl, sd (1816). Small in-4, first two-sheet n. ch. and 5 ff. in medium, very legible handwriting (approx. 35 lines per page), qqs underlining, sewn. Napoleon's most important protest against Sir Hudson Lowe's behavior, in the form of a letter written by Montholon. According to annotations in wood pencil, this is an autograph copy written by Montholon himself (and therefore distinct from the original addressed to the governor), in the hand of General Anatole de Montesquiou-Fezensac (1788-1878). This copy was intended to be sent to Europe and published to inform public opinion of the Emperor's fate. Santini was in charge of delivery when the Emperor was expelled in October 1816 (the copy was sewn into the lining of his coat). The publication was announced by an insertion in the Morning chronicle of March 13, 1817, recopied by Montesquiou: "We insert today Napoleon's memoir addressed in the form of a letter to Sir Hudson Lowe; it will excite the keenest interest not only in England, but in all parts of the world. It will be published today, March 13, by Ridgway in French and English from the copy brought back from St. Helena by Mr. Santini." Dry stamp Collection E. Rossignol.

Small cut on spine, large light stain on back cover. 12 pages each featuring the month's calendar, a poem by R. de Montesquiou, a flight of bats and a woodcut vignette, all engraved and printed in metallic cameos and colors. A rare and beautiful brochure, with a sophisticated layout and printing.

First edition. Cover illustrated after a signed composition by Lalique. A copy given by the author to the actress Sarah Bernardt (1844-1923), to whom poems 25 to 28 of this collection are dedicated, with the autograph letter: "?to my great and illustrious friend Sarah Bernhardt, with the homage of poems XXV and following? Elegant binding by Franz with Sarah Bernhardt's cipher.
