MENGHI, Girolamo (1529-1609). Flagellum daemonum, exorcismos terribiles, potentissimos, et efficaces [WITH:] Fustis Daemonum adiurationes, formidabiles. Venice: Guerra, 1597. One of the most famous treatises on exorcisms and demonology edited by Girolamo Menghi, theologian of the Order of Friars Minor. The work, first published in 1577, was a great success (with fourteen editions from 1577 to 1626) and is structured as follows: the 'Flagellum daemonum' on the nature, manifestation, and power of the Devil, the 'Remedia efficacissima' dedicated to the administration of medicines and prayers to be recited to free the possessed, and the 'Fustis daemonum', containing precepts for exorcisms. Menghi immediately gained great notoriety in both popular and ecclesiastical circles, but he also received much criticism for his methods and remedies, which were deemed superstitious and illicit in the practice of medical administration; in 1709 the work was therefore definitively banned by the Sacred Congregation. 8vo, (150 x 105mm). Symbol of the Congregation of Friars Minor on the title pages, woodcut initials (small holes in the first two leaves with loss of a few letters, a few marginal tears, some spotting and foxing). Contemporary full vellum binding (detached, somewhat worn). (1)

Group of autograph letters by the great Italian journalist and writer Matilde Serao, written while she was editor of the Naples 'Giorno', the first newspaper to be founded and directed by a woman in Italy. 4 autograph letters (210 x 130mm) 2 on Naples 'Il Giorno' headed paper, one headed '7 Piazza Vittoria Naples', and one on blank paper (some wear and tear). (4)

Set of Twelve Chairs Height: 86 cm Width: 58 m Depth: 51 cm Set of twelve Italian chairs from 1950 design by Gustavo Pulitzer. The set of chairs had been produced for the Italian shipbuilding manufacture. The chairs have a dark wooden frame. While the seat and backrest are made of cushion with dark pink silk lining. The fabric is the original one of the time still in perfect condition.
