Description

PIRANESI. Veduta del Palazzo Odescalchi.

Etching, 615x382 mm. Wide margins. State II/VI. Contemporary Roman issue. Good condition. The Odescalchi Palace, originally owned by the Colonna family, was sold in 1661 to Cardinal Fabio Chigi (the future Pope Alexander VII), who commissioned Gian Lorenzo Bernini to renovate it. In the 1640s, the Chigi palace was purchased by Prince Baldassare Odescalchi, who commissioned Nicola Salvi and Luigi Vanvitelli to once again enlarge the facade to the appearance we see here.
