Arrived in Venice in 1731, the Englishman J.B. Jackson received the encouragement of A.M. Zanetti for his engraving work and in 1738 he engraved in chiaroscuro for Consul Smith this Neptune by Giambologna, from a copper sculpture in the Consul's private collection. After this fine proof, the collector and patron Smith proposed to the artist to engrave in chiaroscuro some of the paintings of major Venetian artists.
