Smeers). Greek text and French translation by Ambroise Firmin Didot. Illustrated with 54 figures by Girodet, reproduced in photographs and laminated. The set is followed by verse imitations of Anacreon by Girodet. A good copy. Covers and corners rubbed, lacking engraved title with edition date.

Superb letter to painter Anne-Louis Girodet (1767-1824) about his painting Le sommeil d'Endymion: "Je vous fais hommage, Citoyen, d'une imitation en vers de votre tableau si poétique d'Endymion endormi, il est impossible de voir ce charmant tableau sans se sentir inspiré, mais je l'étois que par une réminiscence de six ans. My composition would be better if I had had my model before my eyes. Salutations and fraternity, J.P. Chazal". Stamp of the A Juncker collection, no. 309. The picture, painted in 1791, is now in the Louvre. Beautiful letter.
