Jacob Samuel Beck, Hen with Chicks Nightly summer landscape with a white hen and five chicks in front of a thistle by a rivulet, fine glazed, sometimes slightly impasto animal painting, the Künstlerlexikon Nagler (1835) remarks "... The deceptive truth of his animals and fruits [is] highly praised. ...", oil on canvas, signed and dated "J. S. Beck f. 1772" lower right, craquelure, relined, restored, minor scratches, framed, rebated dimensions approx. 51.5 x 71 cm. Artist information: German portrait, animal and still life painter and copyist (1715 Erfurt to 1778 Erfurt), son of the wealthy Erfurt "councillor relative" and "police commissioner" Georg Konrad Beck, created portraits of Duke Karl Alexander von Württemberg-Winnental, Prince Leopold I. of Anhalt-Dessau and Duke Carl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, produced the interior decorations of Molsdorf Castle near Erfurt between 1733-48 on behalf of Count Gustav Adolf von Gotter, created a dance of death cycle for the Erfurt Augustinian monastery with other artists in 1736-76, 1752 appointed "court and cabinet painter" to Duke Karl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, achieved fame through his finely observed animal paintings and fruit still lifes, around 1777 probably stayed in Jelgava [Engl.Mitau], source: Thieme-Becker, AKL, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Nagler, Meusels Künstlerlexikon and Wikipedia.

Germany - ISSEL (Heinrich) & HANSJAKOB (Heinrich). Volkstrachten aus Dem Schwarzwald. Freiburg, Johannes Elchlepp's Volkunstvertrag, [1900]. In-8 Italian style (15.4 x 23.4 cm) of 4 ff. n. ch., 25 plates, dark red percaline, top cover decorated with a large medallion featuring a polychrome maiden's head and framed with floral decoration, title, editor and ornamentation gilt, gilt edges (publisher's cartonnage). Album is illustrated with 25 chromolithographs depicting Black Forest costumes and customs, based on aqurelles by Heinrich Issel (1854-1934), the famous German costume painter. Preface by Heinrich Hansjakob (1837-1916), writer and politician from Baden, renowned for his works on local history. A very fine copy. (Colas, no. 1525).
