Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Autograph Letter Signed on Translation of His Poetry

ALS signed “Henry W. Longfellow,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, March 16, 1855. Handwritten letter concerning the translation of his literary works, in part: "I am extremely sorry to say, that I have not been able as yet to find a publisher for your admirable translations of my poems—admirable, if they are all equal, to those you have had the kindness to send me. The objection is, the small sale of French books in this region and the great expense of printing works in a foreign language. My publisher says, and I rather incline to his opinion, that it would be much better to print and publish in Paris, and let him import such copies as he might find saleable. I hope this will not prevent you from translating 'Evangeline,' as you suggest the possibility of doing it. It ought to be done into Prose—I should say—a rhythmic, poetic prose, divided into stanzas. What is your opinion? Many thanks for the 'Cimetière juif de Newport.' It is excellently well translated. Truly, you have a wonderful facility of doing these things. This fits like a glove." In fine condition.
