William B. Franklin Autograph Letter Signed

United States Army officer (1823-1903) and a Union Army general in the American Civil War who was blamed for the debacle at Fredericksburg. ALS signed “W. B. Franklin,” one page, 8 x 10.5, March 19, 1885. Handwritten letter to Gen. William Farrar 'Baldy' Smith, in part: "You wrote me some time ago...that you were then writing your reminiscences of the Peninsular Campaign. The Century Magazine had asked me to write an account of the Battles of Savage Station & of White Oak Swamp. I would like to read your reminiscences before writing on the subject. 1st because they would be interesting in themselves & 2nd because I might get items which have passed from my memory, and 3rd because our stories should agree. If you are willing, I would will be glad if you will send me such part of your story as relates to these two fights." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original sales folder from early 20th century antiquarian bookseller Ernest Dressel North.
