Lincoln Assassination: Joseph Holt Civil War-Dated Endorsement Signed

Politician (1807-1894) who was a member of the Buchanan administration, later serving as Judge Advocate General of the Army. Most notably, he was the chief prosecutor in the trial of those accused of involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln. Document endorsed “J. Holt,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 10, August 29, 1864, War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington. D.C. Printed Special Orders No. 284, ordering Captain Jacob F. Stagle of the 149th Pennsylvania Volunteers to report to the Judge Advocate General for temporary duty. Signed on the reverse by Holt as Judge Advocate General. Also signed by Robert Williams as Asst. Adjutant General (Williams was Adjutant General of the U.S. Army from 1892-93) and multiple times by William B. Rochester, Jr. (later Paymaster General of the Army and grandson of the founder of Rochester, N.Y.), and other officers. Jacob F. Stagle, was an aide on the staff of General Abner Doubleday and fought in the Battle of Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg. In very good to fine condition, with light soiling and handling wear, and small tape repairs to separated folds.
