Clara Barton Typed Letter Signed on the American National Red Cross in Cuba Teacher and humanitarian (1821-1912) best known for founding the relief organization the American Red Cross. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 10.25, The American National Red Cross letterhead, March 11, 1899. Letter to the Washington correspondent of the St. Louis Chronicle, in part: "The American National Red Cross, at the request of the President of the United States, the Secretary of War, and the Military Governor of Cuba, and with the co-operation of the Surgeon General, is about to dispatch a staff to Cuba to take up auxiliary hospital work there and assist in the care of the sick, homeless, and helpless people of the island." In fine condition, with trimmed top and bottom edges. Typed on appealing American National Red Cross letterhead, this is a great letter on one of Barton's important missions.
