Andrew Johnson Document Signed as President, Pardoning a Young Counterfeiter

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.5 x 11, October 22, 1867. President Johnson authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to “a Warrant for the unconditional pardon of Henry Cotter.” Signed crisply at the conclusion by Andrew Johnson. In fine condition. As referenced in the 1868 House of Representatives documents archive: ‘Henry Cotter was convicted at the May term, 1864, of the United States court for the northern district of New York, of passing an altered United States treasury note, and sentenced to five years and three months imprisonment. Pardon was granted on account of his youth, previous good character, correct conduct during imprisonment, and his having served out more than half of his sentence. This was his first offense. Pardoned October 22, 1867.’
