Werner VON PIGAE (1888-1959), Farbskizze 'Beim Skatspiel', für Wandgemälder des Berliner Straßenreinigungsdepots, Berlin, 1936 Technique: Pencil and watercolor on paper, drawn on cardboard, Signature: unsigned, with handwritten comments Pigages 'Neubau- Straßenreinigungsdepot-Charlottenbg.Akazienalee 51', 'Studie beim Skatspiel-für Wandgemälde 1936- 2/3 lebensgroß, verso with list of various works, dated 1936, Dimensions: 19 x 24.5 cm, card 22 x 27 cm, Condition: good, somewhat soiled, Literature: 'Werner v. Pigage - Ein Malerleben in Deutschland 1888-1954', catalog Hubert Vogler Collection - Claus Reisinger, Worms 2014, p. 174, SVR-167, Comment: Pigage was a German painter. After training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Breslau under Arnold Busch, among others, he worked as a decorative painter and draughtsman from 1910. After a war injury, he settled in Mannheim around 1917, where he successfully painted scenes of the Schwetzingen palace gardens and the Mannheim parks. In 1934 he moved to Berlin, where he met Adolf Hitler through his parents-in-law. Ultimately, he received numerous state and private commissions to paint various rooms in the Reich's institutions. This was probably also the case with the commission for this mural to decorate the premises of the Berlin-Charlottenburg street cleaning depot.
