Description

Philip Alexius de László, PRBA, Hungarian/British 1869-1937- Portrait of Henry de László, the artist's son, seated at a table and holding a glass bowl; oil on canvas, 55.2 x 52.7 cm. Note: The present work depicts Henry de László (1901-1967), the eldest of the artist's five sons, as a young child. Henry, seated at the table and playing with a glass bowl (a motif which features in many of De László's portraits of his children), looks out at the viewer with a very earnest, serious expression, which imbues the portrait with a particularly endearing quality. De László was primarily celebrated as a society portraitist, executing commissions for high-society and prominent contemporaries. The formality of these commissioned works contrasts with his more relaxed portraits of his family, imparting these paintings with a striking sense of intimacy and affection. Indeed, this work recalls a portrait of two of the artist's other children, Paul Leonardo (1906-1982) and Patrick David de László (1909-1980), which sold at Roseberys on 27 February 2024 (lot 317) for £11,000.
