Description

Rudolf Heinrich Schuster, German 1848-1902- Klausen, South Tyrol; oil on board, signed with initials and inscribed 'RS / Klausen' (lower right), bears later inscription in German verso, 24.2 x 42.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The expansive, dramatic landscape depicted in the present work is typical of Schuster's style, with a sense of theatricality conveyed by the sharply contrasting colours of the clouds, an approach which the artist used in a painting which sold at Grisebach, Berlin, on 1 June 2016 (lot 156) for €2,000. A strong sense of stillness and peace is evoked by the seeming desertion of the scene, with human presence implied only by the walled path which winds through the landscape to the right of the composition.
