Sir George Clausen, RA RWS, British 1852-1944- Dawn Sea and Downs; pencil and watercolour on paper, signed 'G CLAUSEN' (lower right), dedicated 'To Mr & Mrs Lamb' (lower left), 18.4 x 25.3 cm. Provenance: Collection of Helen and Arthur Grogan. with Abbott & Holder Ltd., London. Private Collection, UK. Note: Clausen worked in the studio of Edwin Long (1829-1891), before travelling to Paris, where he studied at the Académie Julian, under William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) and Tony Robert-Fleury (1837-1911). He went on to become a founding member of the New English Art Club in 1886 and Master of the Art Workers' Guild in 1909, alongside his position at Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy. The Grogans were major collectors of late nineteenth century and later British works of art, whose extensive collection included many Pre-Raphaelite paintings and works by members of the New English Art Club, some of which are now in the collections of national museums including the Walker Art Gallery.
