LITERATURE - CRUIKSHANK George (1792 - 1878) - Autograph letter signed Autograph letter signed, dated “Dec 9t 60” by the British caricaturist and book illustrator. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. He illustrated the first, 1823 English translation (by Edgar Taylor and David Jardine) of Grimms' Fairy Tales, published in two volumes as German Popular Stories. Addressed to Mr. Sheatfield: “…I saw my piece Dr. Cowe yesterday. Who addressed me to se Sir Peter S… or his nephew - As I had the pleasure of knowing both these gentleman, I went to the nephew. Duke of Wellington Signed Free Frank Hand-addressed envelope, 4.75 x 3, filled out in Wellington's hand and dated to "September twenty third 1834,” addressed to “Colonel, Sir John Woodford,” and franked in the lower left corner, "Free, Wellington." The reverse flap retains its original red wax seal. In fine condition. Major-General Sir John George Woodford, KCB (1785-1879) was a British Army officer who has been called ‘possibly the first battlefield archaeologist.’ He served in the Napoleonic Wars, and in 1818, did archaeological work in the area surrounding the Battle of Agincourt. He served as aide-de-camp to Wellington during the Battle of Waterloo, and it’s been stated that Woodford was the last living British officer to have fought at the historic battle.
