Description

Munich School, late 19th century- Portrait of a female saint in prayer, standing half-length, holding a crucifix; oil on canvas, 70 x 57 cm. Provenance: Property from a European Private Collection. Note: The present work very much recalls the approach of artists from the Munich School, both in its religious subject matter, and in its technique, defined by a handling of the paint which is at once delicate and highly-finished, and, conversely, somewhat Impressionistic, much like the work of Gyula Benczúr (1844-1920), who trained at the Munich School. The present scene also gestures towards Gabriel von Max's (1840-1914) quietly dramatic portraits of religious figures, including that of Katherina Emmerich, which is now held in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich [7739].
