Émile Pierre de la Montagne, Belgian 1873–1956- The Presentation; oil on canvas, signed 'Em. De La Montagne' (lower left), bears old artist's label with hand-written inscription 'La Présentation' attached to the reverse, 70.5 x 98.5 cm. Provenance: Property from a European Private Collection. Note: De la Montagne completed a number of quiet, contemplative scenes, often depicting women working or reading in an interior, or children playing, making the present work something of a departure from the artist's typical oeuvre. Indeed, the historical setting has allowed the artist to exhibit his technical ability, depicting the rich variety of textures and fabrics of the figures' costumes.
