Description

Attilio Simonetti, Italian 1843-1925- Study of a cardinal reading a letter; watercolour on paper, signed, dated and inscribed 'Attilio Simonetti / ROMA 71.' (lower right), 41.5 x 26.7 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Simonetti was friends with the artist Marià Fortuny (1838-1874), with the two artists sharing a studio for a period. The present work is typical of Simonetti's watercolours, depicting figures standing full-length in what appears to be somewhat imagined and elaborate historical dress, with similar examples held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York [87.15.71, 87.15.72, and 87.15.1].
