Description

Attributed to Antonin Zimmer, Czech 1819-1869- Alpine landscape, with figures and cattle by a waterfall; oil on canvas, signed 'Zimmer' (lower left), 92 x 115.5 cm. Provenance: Property from a European Private Collection. Note: Zimmer produced a number of scenes which depicted a somewhat idealised, pastoral scene of figures and their cattle set against a dramatic Alpine landscape, the grand scale of which dwarfs the diminutive forms of the figures below. Indeed, in the present work, the artist has evoked the contrasted the darkness of the derelict cottage in the foreground with the light, bright pigment of the skies and the peaks of the mountains beyond, in this manner opposing the sublime heights of these summits with the tendency towards dilapidation of the civilisation below.
