Austrian portrait painter (active 2nd quarter of the 19th century) Child portrait of the later Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria as a hunter Full-length, sensitive portrait of Franz Joseph (1830 - 1916) standing on a stone terrace in an evening park landscape. Dressed in white trousers, a long black jacket embroidered in gold with a red and white sash draped over his right shoulder; with his left hand he holds a rifle set up on the ground by the barrel, in his right hand a black hat decorated with feathers. On the left side of the picture, a curtain has been pulled aside to reveal a side table with a drawer decorated with the Austrian double-headed eagle; grapes are lying in a bowl and under the table. The painting, which was probably created around 1835 by a painter from Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller's circle, reflects the later emperor's great passion for hunting throughout his life. He received a children's shotgun for Christmas at the age of four and regularly accompanied his father Archduke Franz Karl on hunts in what is now the Lainzer Tiergarten.
