Note: Gill was the son of the portrait painter Edmund Ward Gill (1794-1845), and brother to painters William Ward Gill (1823–1894) and George Reynolds Gill (1827–1904). Gill's landscapes are heavily influenced by those of David Cox (1783-1859), with the subject of waterfalls one to which the artist returned throughout his career.
