Henry Bernard Chalon, British 1770-1849- Portrait of a black and white greyhound in a landscape; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'H.B. Chalon pinxt / 1814' (lower right), 33 x 45.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Chalon was a prominent sporting, equestrian, and animal painter, serving as Animal Painter first to Federica, Duchess of York (1767-1820) in 1795, and later to the Prince Regent (1762-1830) and King William IV (1765-1837). The present work is typical of Chalon's animal portraits, with a very similar painting selling at Phillips, New York, on 20 January 1998 (lot 267) for $4,500.
