British Provincial School, 19th century- Portrait of Archibald Levin-Smith and M.A. Lucia Smith in a wooded landscape, with a dog presenting its catch; oil on panel, inscribed and dated 'M A Lucia Smith & Archibald L. Smith with Beth [?] / Salt Hill, Chichester, Sussex / 1840' verso, 37.8 x 30.3 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work appears to depict Archibald Levin-Smith (1836-1901) as a child, accompanied by a young girl who may well be his sister, at their home in Salt Hill in Sussex, with the spire of Chichester Cathedral visible in the background. Levin-Smith was a High Court judge who became Lord Justice of Appeal in 1892, and Master of the Rolls in 1900. He was also a talented rower who was a member of winning crews both in the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race and at Henley Royal Regatta.
