She was particularly celebrated for her botanical works, producing, over the course of 50 years, 256 paintings of 350 varieties of Californian wildflowers. Chittenden's works exhibit a striking accuracy, with their scientific significance surely enhanced by the assistance she received from her friend Alice Eastwood (1859-1953), a curator of botany at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
