Description

Charles Edward Brock, British 1870-1938- Illustrations from works by Charles Dickens, probably 'Great Expectations' and 'The Old Curiosity Shop'; pencil, watercolour and bodycolour on card, each signed 'C.E. BROCK' (lower right), each 31 x 20 cm., two (2). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Brock was a prolific illustrator, producing drawings for a number of Charles Dickens' (1812-1870) publications, alongside titles such as William Makepeace Thackeray's (1811-1863) 'Vanity Fair' and Jane Austen's (1775-1817) 'Pride and Prejudice'. Although the best-known illustrations for both 'Great Expectations' and 'The Old Curiosity Shop' were in fact by Henry Matthew Brock (1875-1960), Charles Edward's brother, the latter did also produce drawings for both of these titles. The present works appear to depict scenes from these works, including Nell's Grandfather with a customer in his titular 'Old Curiosity Shop', and the moment of Estella's introduction to Pip from 'Great Expectations'.
