Edmund Joseph Sullivan, ARE ARWS, British 1869-1933- Illustration from Captain Marryat's 'The Pirate and the Three Cutters'; pen and ink on paper, signed and dated 'E.J. SULLIVAN / 96' (lower right), 32.9 x 21.5 cm.: together with Jean Hippolyte Marchand, French 1883-1940- Arabesque; pen and ink heightened with white on paper, 17.2 x 19.8 cm.: and Thomas Heath Robinson, British 1869-1953- Illustration from 'Legend of River and Mountain'; pencil, pen, and ink on paper, 25.3 x 17.8 cm., three (3). Provenance: (each) with Abbott and Holder, Ltd., London. Note: Sullivan was a prominent book illustrator of the late 19th century, illustrating titles such as Tom Brown's Schooldays, School for Scandal, and the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Sullivan's illustrated edition of the 'Pirate and the Three Cutters' by Captain Frederick Marryat, a Naval Officer and early proponent of pirate adventure novels, was published in 1897. Robinson's illustration is for the 'Legend of River and Mountain', a collection of folk tales and legends written by Carmen Sylva, the nom-de-plume of Elisabeth of Wied, Queen of Romania.
